Clusters

Six regional research clusters have been created; so far six countries have taken the responsibility to host a particular research cluster. The GIS and Modeling research cluster is hosted by Egypt, River Structure cluster by Ethiopia, Flood Management cluster by Kenya, River Morphology cluster by Sudan, Hydropower Development cluster by Tanzania and Environmental Aspects by Uganda. Each regional research cluster. Each regional research cluster has formed 2 to 3 research group dealing with different specialized topics.

Each research cluster is formed with 3-5 countries in order to carry out research activities for enhancing the research skills and capacity in a particular sub-topic in river engineering. One country is taking the leading role as a research cluster Hosting Node, while the others are playing an active role as research cluster Member Node.

Objectives of Research Clusters

  1. To increase the capacity of the Nilotic countries in River Engineering through the formation of multi-country research clusters.
  2. To organize and produce useful research knowledge for the sustainable development of the Nile and its peoples.

Cluster Hosting Node Activities

  1. Organization of, in co-operation with NBCBN-RE Secretariat, research cluster workshops.
  2. Leading and contributing to research plan development.
  3. Leading and contributing to research cluster activities.
  4. Organization of, in co-operation with NBCBN-RE Secretariat, training courses needed by the research cluster.
  5. Development of communication and keeping close contact with the other research cluster member nodes.
  6. Mobilizing fund for sub-regional and regional research proposal in the area of cluster specialization.

Cluster Member Nodes Activities

  1. Contribution to research plan development in the research clusters in which the country node is a member.
  2. Significant contribution to research clusters activities.
  3. Contribution to the identification and organization of the training needed by the research clusters.
  4. Development of communication and keeping close contact with the research cluster key node and member nodes.
  5. Assisting the research cluster hosting node in mobilizing fund for sub-regional and regional research proposals  in the area of cluster specialization

The Cluster Hosting Node has been selected on the basis of its heightened capacity in this research area. While it is expected that Cluster Hosting Nodes may lead in these activities, all Cluster Member Nodes are invited to assume responsibility for some activities in the Research Cluster.
