5th Regional Workshop on “Capacity Building in Flood Management” April 2009, Kenya

The Nile Basin Capacity Building Network in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, the hosting institute of the NBCBN Kenya node and the Flood Management research cluster, organized the “5th  Regional Workshop on Capacity Building in Flood Management” in Kenya from 20th to 22nd of April 2009.

In the first day of this event a Seminar on "Integrated Flood Management" was organized, while the remaining three days were allocated for the regional meeting of the Flood Management Cluster research teams.

In the seminar day 5 presentations reflecting the different applications and studies in Flood Management were delivered by experts from different institutions and running projects in the region. In addition, presentations by the group coordinators of the cluster and the local action research topics were also presented. The Cluster scientific advisors shared with the seminar participants their knowledge related to the state of the art in the seminar topic.

In the workshop days the discussions focused mainly on the three cluster research topics:

  • Flood and Catchment Management
  • Flood and Drought Forecasting and Early Warning Systems
  • Integrated Flood and Drought Management for Sustainable Development in the Nile Basin

The workshop report including the finding, conclusions and recommendations of the workshop will be published very soon on the NBCBN platform

Visit of NBCBN Knowledge Management Advisor to the Network Secretariat Office, HRI-Cairo, May 2009

Mr. Carel KeulsIn relation to the network specific objective “to develop a sound monitoring and facilitation mechanism to guide and support the Network Development process at local, national, regional and international level.”, Mr. Carel Keuls, the Network Knowledge Management Advisor, UNESCO-IHE, Paid a visit to the network secretariat in the period from 3rd to 7th of May 2009. The objective of this visit was to discuss with the network management team the development of The NBCBN monitoring and assessments system. 

The NBCBN monitoring and assessments system is an instrument that measures and follows the network developments periodically and in a systematically way in order to understand progress and constraints in the network and its operation and to have a more rational basis for supportive action. It will collect data about the network, its members and the social processes involved, in order to enhance our understanding of developments and the achievement of specific goals.

For the network management (including current project management and steering committee) several monitoring tools are suggested to report on the quality and performance of the network regarding the viability of the network, the flow of knowledge through its network members, and the activities and outcomes of collaborative work. Such a set of instruments enables adequate interventions when needed.

This monitoring system is designed to be used by different stakeholders of the network including the steering committee, the network management teams, country group coordinators, and group members
Within this scope, Mr. Carel and the secretariat team discussed and agreed on the following basic elements of the NBCBN monitoring system:

  • The context of the monitor, the objectives, basic framework
  • Indicators, stakeholders, timeframes
  • From Indicators to variables
  • Procedure of implementation

Coming soon: the Special Issue of the Nile Water Science and Engineering Magazine on Water and Climate

Within the Network activities related to the multidisciplinary research modality and based on the recommendation of the workshop organised by NBCBN on climate change Impact on the Water Resources in the Nile Basin in October 2008, The organizing committee of the NBCBN “Nile Water Science and Engineering magazine” is planning to publish its special issue on Water and Climate by end of May 2009. The main objective of this special issue is to assess the research done by the Nile Water researchers in the field of climate change and its impact on the water system in the Nile Basin. The papers submitted were reviewed by a highly technical review committee from both international and regional institutions.

Online system for the Nile Water Scientific and Engineering Magazine

Nile Water Scientific and Engineering MagazineThe NBCBN-SEC developed an online system for its scientific magazine for better facilitation. Within the current design the system enables the author to:

  • Submit his abstract and follows up the paper review progress.
  • Receive a notification for any comments on his abstract and paper.
  • Link his paper to the different subjects under the magazine scope.

While the reviewers will be able to use the system to communicate their comments to the authors through the different levels of paper review including abstracts and papers.

In the mean time, the system will help the network secretariat to manage the magazine development progress, submission and acceptance of the abstracts, and full papers.

This system will be launched and applied from the coming regular issue of the scientific magazine.

New Director for the Hydraulics Research Institute and Country Coordinator for NBCBN Egypt Node

Dr. Fathy El-GamalStarting from 1st of May 2009, The hydraulics Research Institute received its new Director, Prof. Dr. Fathy El-Gamal. Eng. Ibrahim El-Desouky the former director was promoted to work as the deputy chairman of the Electrical and mechanical Department of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt.

Prof. Dr. Fathy El-Gamal will take also the responsibility of the NBCBN Egypt node Country Coordinator. Dr. Fathy has a broad experience, covering the different aspects of Water Resources Planning and Management and Hydraulic Engineering, Gained during 32 Years of involvement in the studies of integrated water management projects, morphological river problems using both mathematical and physical models, monitoring and evaluation of Mega water resources projects.

While NBCBN Secretariat and management team wishes all the success for Prof. Dr. Fathy in his new position would like in the mean time to thank Eng. Ibrahim El-Desouky very much for his significant contribution to the NBCBN development since its early start and for his continuous support and guidance to the NBCBN secretariat during the last period.

Overview on NBCBN Research Activities:

GIS and Modelling Research Cluster

The GIS-Modelling research cluster is one of 6 research cluster under the Nile Basin Capacity Building Network for River Engineering. The cluster is coordinated by Egypt node, where the Hydraulics research Institute is the hosting institute. In addition to Egypt other 5 Nile Basin countries are members, which are Sudan, D.R. Congo, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Research Title: GIS Based Decision Support Tool for Sustainable Development of SUDD Marshes Region (SUDAN)” 

In this research a comprehensive water related information system for the SUDD region will be the core for sustainable development. Development projects such as sanitation, irrigation, transportation, urban and rural planning and expansion will be using such information system. This research will provide the tools and capacity for better decision making at the region taking into consideration the possible effects of climate changes as well as the human intervention.

The group is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Karima Attia, Nile Water Research Institute, Egypt, the group scientific advisors are Prof. Roland Price, UNESCO-IHE and Dr. Zoltan Vekerdy, ITC the Netherlands and the group composition is as follows:

Research Objectives:
The main research objectives are:

  • Develop a GIS-based Decision Support tool for sustainable development of the SUDD marshes in Sudan.
  • Built base knowledge on the previous changes in the area, specially during floods and droughts
  • Study the projected future precipitation and temperature changes on the area and how they will impact the hydrologic behavior of the study area
  • Produce sustainable development options of the SUDD area under different climatic changes scenarios.
  • Demonstrate the group capabilities in developed tools based on GIS and modeling to tackle a real problem.
  • Build the needed Capacity in the fields of impact of climate changes on water resources management, wetland sustainable development, GIS and remote sensing.

Research Future Plan

  • Modelling of safe intervention of SUDD Area
  • Modelling the reach between Marwei dam and the Entrance of Lake Nasser
  • Improved water and land management in the Ethiopian highlands and its impact on downstream stakeholders dependent on the Blue Nile  (Case study Lake Nasser Nubia)
  • Modelling and mitigation of reservoir sedimentation process in the Nile basin countries (case study Rouseries and Senar)
